Shawn Poppie and the Clemson women’s basketball program have landed an ACC transfer.
Virginia Tech transfer Mackenzie Nelson has committed to Clemson, according to national women’s college basketball and recruiting reporter Talia Goodman.
As a redshirt sophomore this past season, the 5-foot-8 guard averaged eight points, 5.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game while starting all 32 games she appeared in. She ranked second in the ACC in assists per game, while shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from 3-point range.
As a redshirt freshman in 2024-25, Nelson averaged six points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per game across 32 contests, including one start. She owned a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranked top 10 in the ACC.
Prior to not competing for the Hokies in 2023-24 and earning a redshirt, Nelson played high school ball at St. Luke’s in Connecticut for three seasons, where she was a captain each year and led her team to the NEPSAC championship game, where she scored 45 points. She scored 1,000 points her senior season and was FAA All-First Team, All-NEPSAC and was the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year.
Before her time at St. Luke’s, she played for Greenwich (Conn.) for one season and was first-team All-State as a freshman, totaling 530 points, 136 rebounds and 89 steals in 23 games.
She was ranked No. 65 in the 2023 ESPN recruiting rankings.
