Clemson Needed Its 11-Run First Inning

CLEMSON — Erik Bakich was very direct after Clemson used an 11-run first inning to knock off No. 13 Boston College Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

“I do not know if there is a team that needed an inning like that more in the history of baseball than we did today,” Bakich said following the Tigers’ 14-4 victory.

Clemson (27-20, 7-16 ACC) tallied eight hits in the inning, while bringing 16 batters to the plate. Six different Tigers recorded a hit in the inning, as they nearly batted around the lineup twice.

Boston College pitching also had three walks and hit two batters to help the Clemson cause in the record first inning. The Tigers laid down two perfectly squeezed bunts from Tyler Lichtenberger and Bryce Clavon, which both scored runs.

“It was just what the doctor ordered, for sure,” Bakich said.

The 11-run first inning, helped the Tigers snap their five-game losing streak in conference play and their four-game losing streak overall. Clemson came into the second game of the BC series in last place in the ACC standings.

“We have been wanting to play that way for a while, but the game has to give you those opportunities, we have to create those opportunities, so it feels like we have been going to station to station for a while with the personnel, who is on base, the complexion of the game, being down runs, whatever,” Bakich said. “We just have not had the opportunities to really apply pressure like that.

“It is my favorite offense to run when you can actually do things like that. The right guys were up in the spot and the right guys on base to steal. It all worked out, and then every guy is the right guys to hit a home run.”

Nate Savoie was that guy, as well as Luke Gaffney. The two hit back-to-back home runs with one out in the first, including Savoie’s three-run jack over the wall in left centerfield. He also led off the inning with a double.

Savoie admitted he has never been a part of anything like that first inning in his baseball career.

“It was pretty sweet. That was a good start. That was a good way to start it off,” he said.

Clemson’s 11 runs in the first inning were the most runs by the Tigers in any inning since they scored 11 against the Citadel on May 18, 2019. The 11 runs also tied for the second most in Clemson history in the first inning of any game.

It does not stop there.

The 11-run first inning is the most runs in a first inning by the Tigers since they scored 12 against Marshall on March 10, 1987.

It does not stop there.

Clemson’s 11-run first inning matches the most it has scored to start an ACC game, since it scored 11 in the first inning against Maryland on March 27, 1986.

It does not stop there.

The last time Clemson scored 11 or more runs in an inning in ACC play was 17 against Notre Dame in the 2018 ACC Tournament.

It does not stop there.

The last time Clemson scored at least 11 runs in an inning in ACC regular season play came in 2005, when the Tigers scored 11 against Miami in the 4th inning. Clemson also scored 11 runs in an inning against Duke that year, as well.

“It was a complete offensive day for us. We did it a variety of ways,” Bakich said. “It was good to see.”

And the Tigers did it against Boston College starter Brady Miller, who had a 2.58 ERA in nine weekend starts this year. He averaged nearly six innings pitched per outing, but Clemson ran him off with one out in the first inning, as he allowed 9 of the 11 first inning runs. He gave up five hits, walked three and hit one.

Miller had committed just 16 walks all year before Saturday.

“That was their statistical ace and one of the best pitchers in the conference,” Bakich said. “Just watching him on film and looking at his metrics and his stuff, he is tough. He has been tough on everyone. We got some good takes holding the zone. I thought we had a good approach of trying to reduce his arsenal and, luckily, that worked. Then the bunts and those things helped, as well.

“It was a good offensive output against a really good pitcher. He is going to go on and continue to pitch very well. He is a really good pitcher.”

Clemson and BC will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
