Freshman Wideout Planning to Put On ‘Show’

Clemson has set itself up well for the future when it comes to the wide receiver position.

The Tigers signed three blue-chip wideouts back in December, and all three were early enrollees. Naeem Burroughs was one of the cornerstones of the class, regardless of the position, seeing as he was the highest-rated player in the class per 247Sports and Rivals. The latter slotted the speedy wideout inside the Top 45 prospects in the nation.

Carrying those kinds of credentials, Burroughs was a very sought-after player during his high school career. He had more than three dozen offers in total, with some of the biggest programs in the country in pursuit.

However, Burroughs realized fairly quickly where he wanted to play, committing to the Tigers during last year’s Elite Retreat. The decision came three months before the start of official visit season, and Burroughs never wavered.

“I made the right decision. I love it here,” Burroughs said on a recent episode of the 2 Right Turns podcast. “I’ve been waiting to get on campus and getting this train rolling.”

One of the biggest things to factor into his decision was the culture Dabo Swinney has established inside the program.

“I just feel like a lot of schools try to focus on just the football aspect,” Burroughs said. “Like, ‘Oh, we’re in a big city, our football team is great,’ but they’re not really showing love, like genuine love, when it comes to wanting me as a football player. That’s the thing. It’s more than just football. I want to know that if the day comes that football is over for me and I can’t play again, that you’re just going to be the same exact person that you’re being. And that was the thing with Coach Swinney. Coach Swinney showed me that his love for me isn’t just as a football player.”

Burroughs brings elite speed to the wide receiver room. As a senior, he had 58 catches for 1,275 yards with 18 touchdowns. He finished his high school career with more than 3,000 all-purpose yards.

That kind of playmaking ability is what he says he is planning to bring to the Tigers’ offense during his debut season.

“Explosive, playmaking, exciting,” Burroughs said. “I feel like every time you sit in the stands, and you’re coming to watch me play, you’re going to get a show out of me.”
