Asher Ghioto has made his decision.
After seriously considering reclassifying up to the 2027 class, the five-star defensive linemen has decided to remain in the 2028 class.
Ghioto took numerous visits in the spring as he contemplated making the move. One of those was to Clemson for the Elite Retreat, an event routinely reserved for rising high school seniors.
“I don’t think the visit could have gone any better,” Ghioto told TCI after the Elite Retreat. “If you think of a picture-perfect visit in terms of information and how long you are there for and how amazing it was, I feel like that was it. That was the ideal day you are going to go through. It was long, but it was information-packed. That is what you need on these types of visits. Now, I feel like I don’t have to take a bazillion more visits to know if I want to commit there. I don’t feel like I would even need to go back to make a decision.”
A former teammate of current wideout Naeem Burroughs, Ghioto attends The Bolles School down in Florida, an institution well-known for its stringent academics. Reclassifying would have meant having to get a lot of schoolwork done in a short amount of time, and the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder takes his academics too seriously.
“I go to a college prep school,” Ghioto said. “They are hard on grades, and I don’t want to mess my GPA up by rushing.”
Both major recruiting services rank Ghioto inside the Top 7 overall and as the second-best defensive end in his class. With that kind of pedigree, it should come as no surprise that he has accumulated close to 60 offers in total.
Had he reclassified, Ghioto would have immediately had an offer from Clemson. Now that he’s not, you can bet almost anything he will have one come the first week in June when the staff starts handing out offers to players in his class.
While he has yet to officially lock in any plans, the blue-chip prospect said he is hoping to get back to campus for a session of Dabo Swinney’s camp next month. However, it’s probably safe to assume that it won’t be a prerequisite to an offer. Ghioto worked out at camp last year and has visited multiple times in the past. All the required boxes seem to have already been checked.
