Clemson Lands One of Nation’s Top Running Backs

Clemson has its man.

Four-star RB Gary Walker (Creekside, GA) announced a commitment to the Tigers on Wednesday, choosing Clemson over other schools that included Penn State, Florida State, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Stanford. He was scheduled to begin taking his official visits this weekend, with a trip to Stanford up first.

Walker picked up an offer from the Tigers after visiting for the Elite Retreat in March. He returned to campus in late March for a second spring visit and will be back for the big official visit weekend, May 29-31.

“Clemson has been proactive in communication with me, my coaches and parents,” Walker told TCI in a previous interview. “The entire staff has been involved.”

The coaching staff really made Walker the priority in recent weeks, even before four-star Andrew Beard, the other target who held an offer, announced for Florida earlier this month. Running backs coach C.J. Spiller did an in-home with the blue-chip talent a few weeks back and the assistant coach was back at his high school on May 7 to take in one of his spring practices.

Walker becomes the first running back to commit in the 2027 class, and he will likely be the only take at the position. It comes after the Tigers ultimately elected not to sign a back in the pervious recruiting cycle. Instead, the staff went out and added Chris Johnson via the transfer portal.

The 6-foot, 200-pound prospect rushed for 1,669 yards with 20 touchdowns as a junior, helping lead his team to a 4A state title. 247 Sports and Rivals both rank Walker as one of the eight best backs in the class, with Rivals slotting him No. 131 overall.

Walker is the second Top 150 talent to commit to the Tigers this week, with four-star safety announcing a verbal pledge on Monday. He becomes the ninth member of the 2027 class, and the third on the offensive side of the ball, joining four-star QB Kharim Hughley and four-star in-state wideout Trey Wimbley.
