Clemson Picking Up Steam Heading Into Big Weekend

It’s hard to ignore the momentum Clemson is building on the recruiting trail.

With the Tigers’ big official visit weekend less than a week away, that momentum is coming at an opportune time.

Clemson has already landed commitments from three highly-touted prospects over the last week, and that number figures to grow on Monday, with four-star offensive lineman Carter Jones set to reveal his college destination. Jones has basically been the guy at the top of Matt Luke’s board since the onset, and getting the 6-foot-6, 295-pounder in the fold would be one more feather in the offensive line coach’s cap after he signed one of the best group of linemen in the country last year. And Jones might not be the only player to pop off this week for the Tigers ahead of the official visit weekend.

Things got rolling last Monday, with four-star safety Jarrell Chandler announcing for Clemson, choosing the Tigers over Tennessee and Miami, among others. Beating out a school like Miami, whose been known to throw some money around, proves Dabo Swinney’s program still carries some cache on the trail and that it is still possible to go out and beat some of the bigger football brands head-to-head.

Clemson then went out and landed one of the top running backs in class, securing a verbal pledge from four-star Gary Walker on Wednesday. This one might prove to be one of the bigger statements for the Tigers in the 2027 cycle.

Running back has been hit-and-miss for Clemson in recent years. The Tigers targeted three in the last recruiting cycle and ultimately elected not to sign one after missing on all three. This time around, the staff came away with one of the top targets. Arguably, the top target, once it became evident in-state back Tre Segarra was heading elsewhere. That is a win the Tigers needed.

However, that wasn’t the only good news that came on Wednesday. Four-star wideout Jamarin Simmons also committed, giving the Tigers their second receiver in the 2027 class. Four-star in-state prospect Trey Wimbley has long been a member of the class after deciding to reclassify.

Like Jones, Simmons has been the top target at the receiver position. He was the first receiver to pick up an offer after an extremely impressive showing at camp last summer. Florida, Florida State, Auburn and Tennessee were some of the other schools in pursuit.

After a spring that saw very little good news for the Tigers on recruiting front, this was the kind of shot in the arm that was needed heading into what will be the most important recruiting weekend of the year. Assuming Jones announces for Clemson on Monday, the Tigers still need two more offensive linemen. There’s still a need for a tight end, and several spots still to fill on the defensive side of the ball. So there is still more more to be done.

After the stellar week, Clemson’s class currently sits No. 15 nationally in the Rivals Industry Rankings. A week ago, it wasn’t even in the Top 30, meaning things are now starting to head in the right direction.
