Swinney Answers His Critics

CLEMSON — You know those moments when you are driving around and you are just searching for anything on the radio.

That was me a few weeks back as I was driving through Georgia. There was nothing on the radio, so I was just channel surfing. I was looking for a classic rock channel or maybe some prime country from the 1980s or ‘90s.

I finally came across a sports station, and they had a Georgia writer talking about the Bulldogs, SEC and the upcoming football season. I figured this will be good to listen to. Nothing better than college football talk, right?

I did not get the writer’s name because I came in after he was introduced. However, it was the noise I needed as I drove down the backroads of Georgia.

Near the end of the segment, the host asked the Georgia football writer about Clemson, in particular, Dabo Swinney. This perked up my interest, obviously.

I am still not sure how Clemson and Swinney came up in a Georgia discussion, but he did.

What surprised me the most was how much the writer disrespected Dabo Swinney. He blasted Swinney, saying the Clemson coach can no longer recruit and that Clemson is a thing of the past and is something Georgia does not really have to worry about anymore.

It was a pretty hot take, especially for local radio and during a Georgia football segment.

Though I disagreed with his take, I understood, at the time, why the guy said what he said. Clemson has not had those top 15 recruiting classes the last few years that it had for the majority of Swinney’s coaching career.

Two years ago, Clemson lost eight commitments and then four more last year. The Tigers were struggling with NIL and how to properly use it. It seemed like they could not get their feet under them.

When I was listening to this radio show a few weeks back, the Tigers 2027 recruiting class was ranked just in the top 30 or right outside it. Clemson had just seven commits at the time.

Then Jarrell Chandler committed on May 18. Since his commitment to Swinney, the Tigers have had 15 commitments, including seven in the past three days. On Wednesday, three-star CB Bryant Robinson (Frisco, TX) announced a commitment to the Tigers, choosing Clemson over Texas Tech, Arizona State and Arizona.

Swinney now has 12 four-star commits for the 2027 class and Robinson was the Tigers’ 22nd commitment overall. Not too shabby for a guy who can’t recruit like he used to.
