Decision day is rapidly approaching for Seth Williams.
The four-star safety, out of Lakeside High School in the Atlanta area, is set to reveal his college destination on July 3, with Williams set to choose between Clemson and Georgia. The 6-foot-3 defensive back saw his recruitment explode during the spring, with numerous offers from some of the biggest programs in the country coming in. He now has more than 50 in total.
The Tigers offered back in March while Williams was on campus for an unofficial visit. Having gotten caught in the moment, he committed on the spot. However, after returning home and with the emotions of the visit having worn off, he quickly realized he’d made a rash decision. He called the coaching staff the very next day to inform them he wasn’t quite ready to commit. It took two weeks for his decommitment to become public news.
Since then, he’s taken a multitude of unofficial visits. Georgia and Clemson are the only two schools to have received official visits. Ohio State and Florida were both originally scheduled to get officials, but Williams ultimately scratched those.
Now, it’s decision time, as Williams has less than two weeks to decide where he’s going to play at the next level.
“I got two programs left, and both of the programs are prestigious at what they do,” Williams said on the Monday LIVE podcast. “I got Coach Swinney, and he’s been at Clemson for I don’t know how long. He’s been there before me, before I was even born. He is accomplished and well-set in his town. And you got Coach Smart, who is also one of those coaches who have been well-established.”
And it’s the two coaching staffs that have separated the schools from the rest of the pack, particularly the two head coaches.
“For me, I feel like coaching is probably the most important,” Williams added. “A lot of kids might say playing time, a lot of kids might say money, but for me, it comes down to development and coaching staff. If you got a good coaching staff, you are going to be developed regardless.”
Another thing Clemson has going for it is cornerbacks coach Mike Reed. The longtime assistant has produced several NFL Draft picks, including multiple first-rounders, something Williams is certainly aware of. Especially the success Reed’s had with players at the position that hail from the Atlanta area. Look no further than A.J. and Avieon Terrell. A.J was a first-round pick, with younger brother Avieon going in the second. Both players taken by the hometown Falcons.
“You can have a coach who does not really care about how you feel, but if that staff is right and produces, that is the kind of coaching I want,” he said. “And Coach Reed has proved he can take DBs from the Atlanta area and turn them into draft picks. That is really big for me.”
However, while Williams has raved about Clemson and everything it has to offer, there is just as much that he likes about Georgia, and the Dawgs should not be dismissed as we get closer to an announcement.
“I am in great shoes when it comes to this situation.”
