Dion Edwards has been putting in the work in an effort to earn one of those hard-to-get offers from Clemson.
The four-star safety, out of Tyner Academy (TN), first visited campus last fall for the Tigers’ home loss to Syracuse. He returned earlier this month and worked out for the coaching staff at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp, and the effort he’s put in has now paid off.
On Monday, Edwards received a call from safeties coach Nolan Turner and defensive coordinator Tom Allen, who informed him that he was officially being extended an offer from Clemson. He becomes just the second safety in the 2028 recruiting class to pick up an offer from the Tigers.
“I went to camp back at the beginning of June,” Edwards told The Clemson Insider. “The process there is different from all the other schools. They got a process that they go through and then (Monday) was the day. They gave me the call — Coach Turner called me. And then Coach Tom Allen gave me a call as well. And they blessed me with an offer.”
“I mean, it is a big deal, you know,” Edwards said. “Any offer is a big deal to me, but Clemson is definitely a big deal since I know their process.”
While Edwards considers each of his close to 20 offers special, he does admit the one from Clemson hits a little different.
“Obviously, I like their offer process,” Edwards added. “I respect it because it is different. It is not like they are offering everybody. It is just a select few.”
The offer put Clemson among his top contenders, and Edwards said he plans to be back for a game once the season starts.
“They are in my top schools,” he said.
The 6-foot defensive back ranks No. 98 overall in the Rivals Industry Rankings and as the 11th best safety in the class.
Georgia and Colorado also offered in the past few days. Tennessee, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Auburn and Virginia Tech are among some of his other offers.
While Edwards is nowhere close to making a decision, he does know exactly what he wants in a college program, and he doesn’t hide the fact that the business aspect will be heavily weighed.
“I am looking for development, a winning program and hospitality,” Edwards said. “And you know it is a business, so that is part of it as well.”
