The first week of June, Sam Walker was back in Clemson to work out at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp.
While it was the third time the four-star offensive lineman, out of Central High School (GA), had been on campus, it was his first time working out at camp.
“Other camps I have been to, they are more like faster. Like they basically want to get it done or whatever,” Walker told The Clemson Insider. “But Clemson, they like to take time to get your fundamentals and stuff down.”
About two weeks later, the 6-foot-5, 320-pounder got a call from offensive line coach Matt Luke, and almost immediately, Walker knew what was coming.
“Coach Luke called and asked if my parents were there,” Walker said. “I kind of knew at that point it was coming. So, we talked about fishing and about Clemson and things there are to do around Clemson. And then he offered me.”
What came was an offer from the Tigers, giving him more than 20 in total. Clemson joins Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Ole Miss and South Carolina as some of the schools to have already offered. LSU, UCLA, Miami, Kentucky and Texas A&M are some of the more recent ones.
However, this one from the Tigers hit a little differently.
“It is truly a blessing. They don’t just offer anybody,” Walker added. “They really dig deep and take their time picking the right guys and just being sure of what they want.”
After working out at camp, Luke’s coaching style and how he invests in his players are part of what attracts Walker to Clemson.
“When coaches say they want to develop players, some of them just be saying it,” he said. “But I can tell coach Luke actually means it. When he was teaching me at the camp, I could see he actually wants me to be great. He is just a great coach and a great person to be around.”
Walker said he has no definitive timeline for making a decision. He definitely wants to take some visits in the fall and says Clemson will “definitely” get one of those.
At the same time, the Tigers have already made an impression and should be viewed as a realistic contender in his recruitment.
“For Clemson, they are definitely up there for sure,” Walker said. “Because coach Luke, he is always talking to me, always in contact. And Clemson in general, it is just a great place to be. When I was up there, it felt like home. For real.”
