The last few months for Clemson target Seth Williams have been like an emotional roller coaster ride.
Up until March, the four-star safety, out of Lakeside High School in Atlanta, had been mostly flying under the radar. Heading into an unofficial visit to Clemson in late March, Williams only had a handful of Power-4 offers. The Tigers offered that day, with Williams surprisingly committing on the spot. The very next day, Williams informed the Clemson coaching staff he’d gotten caught up in the emotions of the visit, committed prematurely, and that he was backing off that verbal pledge. The staff was supportive of his decision, telling him when he was ready, he’d be welcomed back in with open arms.
However, that is when the floodgates opened, and offer after offer started to roll in. Williams now has more than 50 in total, but quickly whittled his number of finalists to just four. Clemson, Georgia, Florida and Ohio State. After taking official visits to both Clemson and Georgia, Williams cut that number in half, canceling his scheduled visit to the other two finalists.
A commitment date of July 3 was then set, with Williams set to to select between the Tigers and the home state Dawgs. However, on Sunday, the 6-foot-2 defensive back revealed he was postponing his decision, with no new date being given. The reason? He’s still not quite ready to make what will be one of the biggest decisions of his life.
“Being able to be recruited at a later stage like I have is a blessing,” Williams told The Clemson Insider. “For me to blow up like I did, it was kind of out of the ordinary. I was in the spotlight for a minute, and usually when you are in the spotlight for a minute, it dimmers and you get to become a regular person again. For me, that didn’t happen. I quickly gained a lot of traction from bigger and better programs each and every time. Looking back on it, why not really make sure I know where I am going.”
“It is a blessing in disguise that it happened like this, but it is a gift and a curse because I didn’t have the time that the kids who were being recruited since their freshman or sophomore years had, and they had offers already. They knew where they were going or where they wanted to go. For me, it wasn’t really like that. For me to push my commitment date back and not commit when everybody else is committing, it is right for me and my family because we really didn’t go through the full process.”
When Williams informed Nolan Turner, the Clemson safeties coach basically told him to take his time, and that the Tigers would be there when he was ready.
“I talked to coach Turner,” Williams said. “He said he just wanted me to make the best decision for me and my family. If I needed time to wait, I need to wait. He said I knew where home was.”
While he isn’t ready to commit to a definitive timeline for having a decision made, Williams is hoping to be committed by the end of next month.
“The goal is to commit in the month of July,” Williams said. “If it goes past that, then that is what happens, but that is the plan.”
And as things stand right now, he’s still deciding between Clemson and Georgia.
“It is definitely still Clemson and Georgia,” Williams said. “They are both great programs, especially at the position I am going for. When you see these types of schools recruiting you – Clemson and Georgia both put out first-round defensive backs, regardless of the era. They are known for producing DBs. I have a lot of schools that produce a lot of DBs, but it is just a different connection with these two.”
