There’s an old saying that goes, you can’t win them all, and that certainly applied to Clemson on Friday.
With the Tigers having beaten out Georgia for multiple recruiting targets in the 2027 class, Kirby Smart now gets a win over Dabo Swinney, with four-star safety Seth Williams announcing a commitment to the Bulldogs. Clemson and Georgia were the only two schools to get official visits.
The announcement brings Williams’ wild, rollercoaster recruitment to an end, as the blue-chip talent went back-and-forth between the two schools over the past several weeks.
“This is one of those decisions where it is like a win-win,” Williams recently told TCI. “It is also one of those things where you win now and win later, or just win for the rest of my life. These are two great programs. I have been blessed. A lot of people don’t get offered by both of these schools. Wherever I go, I feel like I have learned a lot from both of these coaches. The head coaches, the safety coaches, the nickel coaches, corner coaches, defensive coaches.
“A life-changing decision. It has been a pretty hard decision. You don’t want to make the wrong decision, but I feel like I can’t go wrong with either of these schools.”
Williams actually committed to Clemson on the spot after picking up an offer during an unofficial visit back in March. After getting home, he realized he’d pulled the trigger too quickly and informed the coaching staff the next day that he was backing off that verbal pledge. However, the decommitment didn’t go public for a few weeks.
Williams’ stock exploded after that, with numerous offers rolling in throughout the spring, bringing him to more than 50 in total.
He then set a commitment date of July 3, before deciding to postpone about a week ahead of the announcement.
While Williams may be heading off to Georgia, the Tigers still have two other safeties currently committed in four-star Jarrell Chandler and four-star Harrison Luke, and despite this most recent development, the staff might ultimately elect to stick with the two they have.
Clemson’s 25-member class currently ranks No. 13 in the 247 Composite Rankings.
