CLEMSON — As No. 13 Clemson begins fall camp, head coach Dabo Swinney said his depth at running back starts with a sophomore.

Swinney said just prior to the Tigers hitting the practice field on Thursday, that Gideon Davidson will open camp as the first team running back.

“It is going to start with Gideon. He has really done a great job,” Swinney said.

Swinney did not start or stop with Davidson when talking about his running backs. Right behind Davidson is former Miami and SMU running back Chris Johnson, Jr., who transferred to Clemson in the spring.

The Tigers also have David Eziomume, Jay Haynes and Jarvis Green to use in the backfield.

“I believe we have a better running back room than what people think or know,” Swinney said. “I am hoping to see what I believe is accurate. I am going to be the first one to know because I am going to be at every practice. So, that is what I am hoping to see.”

Here is what Swinney knows. Davidson is back for his second year after an up-and-down freshman season. Johnson comes over from SMU looking to be more of a weapon than he was at his previous stop.

Eziomume begins his third season at Clemson and wants to show off his value, while Haynes and Green are both coming off injuries.

“Honestly, in today’s world, if Jay and Jarvis had been healthy all of last year, we probably do not all five of these dudes. I am just being honest. They were out all year,” Swinney said. “But now they are back and they are healthy and we added (to the room).

“Gideon is experienced now and confident. We got this silent assassin in here, C.J., that does not say much, but he shows up. So, it is going to be fun. It is going to be fun to watch that group. It is going to be a competitive group.”

Swinney concluded by saying he feels all of those players will make a difference for the Tigers at some point this year.
