A former Clemson standout has been impressing his coaches with his preseason performance, and he enjoyed a strong preseason NFL debut this past weekend.
Rookie running back Adam Randall shined for the Baltimore Ravens during their preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
Randall ran for 46 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while also catching a 2-yard pass. He led the Ravens in both rushing attempts and rushing yards, and scored his first NFL touchdown on a 4-yard run with 11:24 remaining in the contest.
Randall was selected by the Ravens in the fifth round of April’s NFL Draft with the No. 174 overall pick. The coaching staff is clearly high on the rookie and his potential, as evidenced by the amount of playing time he received in the preseason opener, as well as their praise for him throughout training camp and the preseason.
Ravens head coach Jesse Minter likes what he’s seen from Randall, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound wide receiver-turned-running back.
“I thought he had a really good year at running back last year at Clemson. He’s got really good versatility. He’s good out of the backfield, obviously, with his receiver background,” Minter said on Aug. 6. “He’s a big body, so he’s continuing to learn to run behind his pads and use that size to his advantage. But I’m really pleased with how he’s done. I think he’s got a lot of versatility. He’s done some nice things on special teams as well. So, just continue to progress, but I like where he’s at.”
Ravens running backs coach Eddie Faulkner believes Randall – who is competing for a depth role in the Baltimore backfield behind veterans Derrick Henry and Justice Hill – has a “really high ceiling.”
Faulkner was asked what Randall needs to do in order to force his way onto the field.
“Make plays,” Faulkner said on Aug. 8. “You’ve got to show up on tape where everybody can see, like, man, this is a guy that can help us. We have some veteran guys in the room who’ve earned their stripes, but they know they’ve got to come to work every day. And Adam’s just got his head down every day, trying to get better each play with everything he’s doing, and we’ll see where that ends up.
“I’m looking forward to the preseason with him, though, just to see his growth. Because I think he’s got a really high ceiling.”
After spending most of his first three college seasons as a wide receiver, Randall contributed at running back in the 2024 College Football Playoff prior to making the permanent position switch in 2025. He earned honorable-mention All-ACC honors last season while rushing for 813 yards and 10 touchdowns on 168 carries. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry and also registered 36 receptions for 254 yards and three more touchdowns, while averaging 23.7 yards per kickoff return.
In 2025, Randall became the fourth player in Clemson history to reach 750 career rushing yards and 750 career receiving yards, joining Travis Zachery, C.J. Spiller and Travis Etienne.
During his Clemson career from 2022-25, Randall recorded 172 carries for 858 yards with 10 touchdowns, while also hauling in 84 receptions for 787 yards and five receiving touchdowns over 50 games, including 20 starts.
Randall was also credited with 13 career kickoff returns for 302 yards (23.2 average) — including a memorable 41-yard return in the 2024 ACC Championship Game to help set up Clemson’s game-winning field goal.
Randall and the Ravens continue preseason action with their next contest this Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn., against the Minnesota Vikings.
