Does Vizzina Agree with Swinney’s ‘Downplayed’ Assessment?

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is confident in Christopher Vizzina and the other quarterbacks on the Tigers’ roster, and that’s why he chose not to pursue a transfer portal QB this offseason and go get what he has called a “shiny object” at QB out of the portal.

Vizzina, a senior, has stayed true and loyal to Clemson and Swinney. So, Swinney did the same and did not go after a QB in the portal.

Before the Tigers took the field for the start of fall camp on Aug. 6, Swinney opined that if Vizzina “had gone in the portal, he would have been the greatest thing ever in the portal.” But because Vizzina did not, Swinney believes he “gets downplayed” by the media and people outside the program.

“Whoever got him [if Vizzina had entered the portal], they’d be writing all these great articles about this great quarterback that we got from Clemson,” Swinney said. “But because he stayed, he gets downplayed. That’s just the nature of this world we’re living in right now. It just is.”

Following Clemson’s practice on Tuesday, Vizzina met with the media and was asked whether he agrees with Swinney’s assessment, and if he thinks it’s accurate that people undervalue him because he chose to stay at Clemson and not enter the portal.

“In a way. In a way,” Vizzina said. “But it just all comes down to me wanting to be here. I don’t really care how other people view me. I know there’s negativity online. I mean, I’m not looking at it or anything, but it’s just how it is.”

After biding his time while serving as the backup to Cade Klubnik for multiple years, Vizzina is now competing with highly regarded true freshman Tait Reynolds to replace Klubnik, who is now in the NFL following his three-year run as Clemson’s starting QB.

Vizzina made it abundantly clear that Clemson is the place he’s always desired to be at – and win at.

“I’ve always wanted to be here. I want people to know that,” he said. “Like, this is the place I want to win at. I’m obviously still standing here, so that’s true. And I feel like all my teammates can see that in how I play.”

Before enrolling at Clemson in January 2023, Vizzina was ranked among the nation’s top prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. The high four-star had more than 30 offers, including from some of the best football programs in the country.

Heading into 2026 after his first three years at Clemson, Vizzina has completed 61 percent of his passes for 596 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in 238 career offensive snaps across 14 games, while also rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.

In his lone career start thus far, Vizzina threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a 35–24 loss to SMU last season, with Klubnik sidelined due to injury.

When Clemson opened fall camp, Swinney said Vizzina continued to be in the “pole position” when it comes to the Tigers’ quarterback race.

Thus far in camp, Vizzina feels he has made the most of his long-awaited opportunity to be Clemson’s QB1.

“From the very beginning, I will say it’s been a lot more fun, as a lot can imagine. But I’ve been waiting on this moment for a long time,” he said. “I feel like I’ve taken full advantage of it.”
