Clemson Still Searching for Fifth Starter on O-Line

CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney, Chad Morris and Matt Luke have all said they are trying to find their five best offensive linemen.

At the moment, the Tigers have four.

Following Thursday’s final scrimmage of fall camp, Swinney said Brayden Jacobs is firmly entrenched at left tackle, followed by Elyjah Thurmon at left guard, Harris Sewell at center and Collin Sadler at right tackle or guard, though Sadler has worked most of camp at right tackle.

“Those four have really impressed me,” Swinney said. “I am pleased with that group.”

As for right guard, Swinney said they are all working.

“It is just musical chairs out there,” he said.

Who are those candidates to be Clemson’s right guard and fill in the missing piece on the offensive line?

Tucker Kattus, Ronan O’Connell, Easton Ware, Grant Wise and Sadler are in all in play. If Sadler is to move in, then look for Ware to start at right tackle.

“We got all kinds of options, and that’s a good thing,” Swinney said.

Overall, the Clemson coaches are pretty pleased with the offensive line, which is important to the overall function of the offense. It is even more important considering the Tigers have a new offensive coordinator in Morris and a new quarterback, which will either be Christopher Vizzina or Tait Reynolds.

Clemson is loaded at the skill positions with Bryant Wesco, Jr., T.J. Moore, Tyler Brown, Chris Johnson, Jr., Gideon Davidson, as well as others, but none of that matters if the offensive line cannot protect the quarterback or get a good enough push up front to run the football.

The reviews have been mixed, coming out of camp. From a physical standpoint, they look the part. From a run blocking standpoint, they have been pretty good.

However, from a pass protection standpoint they have been inconsistent and have allowed a lot of free runners at the quarterbacks, especially up the middle, which is where the Tigers are trying to find a right guard.

“The first group has been really good. I have been really pleased with those guys,” Swinney said. “I think we have some alphas in that group. I have been really pleased.”

Now if the Tigers can fill the open spot at right guard, then their collection will be complete. They will have their five best offensive linemen.

However, that might not be decided until just before the offense runs on the field in Baton Rouge, La., on Sept. 5.
