Despite a new SEC rule looking to keep former NFL players out of the conference, Lane Kiffin and LSU are still eyeing adding another one of those players to the roster.

On Thursday, an amended complaint was filed in Louisiana against the NCAA and the SEC that would allow for DE Jack Pyburn, who is currently playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to return to LSU if he is waived before the September 1 deadline laid out in the new court order.

Pyburn spent last season at LSU after spending his first three years at Florida. Last season, he recorded 38 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery and a pass defended for the Tigers.

Pyburn would mark the third player who spent time on an NFL team this summer that LSU is attempting to add, joining former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris

Earlier this week, the SEC instituted a new policy that prohibits former NFL players from suiting up for member schools. Penalties include a coach suspension of 50% of contests and a hefty fine. The fine will amount to 50% of that sport’s annual operating budget, and the head coach’s suspension will include all coaching, recruiting and administrative duties. Each Power-4 conference now has a similar rule in place.

Lost in all of this is that LSU is set to kick off the season at home against Clemson in less than two weeks. With so much attention on the subject of Kiffin attempting to roster former NFL players is the fact that there is an actual game to be played appears to be getting lost in the shuffle.

Kiffin is entering his first season at the helm in Baton Rouge. LSU saw plenty of roster turnover during the polarizing head coach’s first offseason, with LSU having more that 60 new faces on the team, which included bringing in more than 40 transfers. That portal class was ranked tops in the country.
