Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney declined to dive into specifics about how the Tigers will handle the quarterback position during Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern.

Senior Christopher Vizzina and true freshman Tait Reynolds are listed as co-starters at QB on Clemson’s depth chart for the Georgia Southern game. Swinney didn’t say which signal-caller will start Saturday’s contest, but like last Saturday’s season opener at LSU, both will play, according to Swinney.

“I’m not going to get into specifics of how we’re going to manage the quarterbacks, other than they’re both going to play,” Swinney said during his Tuesday press conference. “That’s just where we are, where we came out of the competition. We just needed to go play games, and we had to go to LSU in an opener. We gotta go play some games. And then all of a sudden you’ve got 13 snaps and it’s 24-3, so it didn’t really go according to our script.

“We didn’t really come out of the game with true clarity. It just wasn’t enough. So we gotta keep moving, and eventually something’s going to happen one way or another. But we gotta go play. So, not going to get into specifics of any of the details of it, but we’ve got to continue to see them both.”

Leading up to the LSU game, Swinney officially named Vizzina the Week 1 starter, though Swinney made it clear that Reynolds would “likely” see snaps under center in Baton Rouge. Swinney also said that Vizzina did not have a “lifetime contract” on the starting job after narrowly beating out Reynolds in fall camp.

After getting the start in Baton Rouge, Vizzina was mostly ineffective, playing until deep into the first half, before Reynolds was inserted. Vizzina would return later in the second half, after Reynolds was also ineffective.

Swinney says Vizzina was “fine” early in the LSU game, but then began “pressing” as the score became lopsided. Swinney believes Reynolds “did some solid things, too” after coming in.

“I thought early he was fine, then I felt like he started pressing a little bit and he missed a couple things that he hadn’t been missing in practice,” Swinney said of Vizzina. “… I just think he started pressing a little. And we needed to get Tait in there, and the score was where it was. We needed to get them both playing.”

Vizzina went 10-of-16 passing for 83 yards and threw a pick-six late in the first quarter, resulting in a 17-3 lead for LSU. In the first half, he went 6-of-11 passing for 51 yards.

Reynolds attempted six passes on the night and completed four of them for 22 yards.

Vizzina graded out a little better against LSU than Reynolds, according to Swinney, but he noted that Vizzina is not so far ahead where Reynolds doesn’t deserve to play as well.

“I thought CV graded a little bit better, and he was ahead in camp. That’s why he started,” Swinney said. “But not so much to where we don’t need to give Tait an opportunity to play some. So, it’ll work itself out as we go.”

Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern is set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and will be televised on ACC Network.
