CLEMSON — Clemson’s loss at No. 11 LSU last week was embarrassing.

It was not embarrassing because the Tigers lost to LSU. Obviously, that is not the case. It was embarrassing because of how they lost.

LSU dominated Clemson at the lines of scrimmage, which is the equivalent to a bully taking your lunch money every day. At some point you have to stand up for yourself and fight back, if not you will go home hungry every day after school.

And listen, I love food too much for someone to come and take my lunch money.

Unfortunately, Clemson did not have that kind of fight in them against LSU, and that was sad to see. So, what did we learn from last week’s loss?

Clemson did not have any fight in them. And that is not a good sign.

I know Dabo Swinney said he was proud of the way his team did not give up and kept fighting, but I did not see that, though. The Tigers finally sustained a drive at the end after LSU called off the dogs.

The Tigers’ lone touchdown was clearly a garbage-time touchdown. I am glad to see those Clemson players play hard and finish with a touchdown. Let’s be honest, here, they were, obviously, not playing against the same LSU defense that we saw the first 50 minutes of the game.

The game ended with LSU driving for another score. That does not look like a team that is still fighting.

Maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am being too harsh.

But there was nothing good that came out of Clemson’s loss last Saturday, even Swinney said that on Wednesday when he was asked about the play of two older linebackers (Fletcher Cothran and C.J. Kubah-Taylor) that came into the game late.

“Nobody put anything good on film. I mean, we gave up 300 yards rushing, so I mean, they’re all a part of it,” he said. “I mean, they came in there and got a little bit of playing time, but you know, everybody’s got to get better.”

And that, in a nutshell, is what we learned about Clemson’s 41-point loss to LSU last week.

“Everybody’s got to get better.” Everybody.

I know, it is Georgia Southern. The Tigers should get better.

They have to show it, though, right? And there is no guarantee they will.

Do you remember last year’s game against Troy? If there was not a lightning delay, I wonder if Clemson would have won that game. Remember, Troy led 16-0 in that game.

Clemson is only a 20.5 favorite against Georgia Southern on Saturday. Considering the two programs and where one is compared to the other, you would think it would be higher. But it is not, which is telling.

A few weeks back, following the Tigers’ second scrimmage of camp, Swinney said his team had a “bunch of nobodies.” Maybe that is what we learned. This Clemson team is really just a team full of a “bunch of nobodies.”
