CLEMSON — Christopher Vizzina started Saturday’s Georgia Southern game for Clemson, but the Tigers half ended with freshman Tait Reynolds.

Vizzina quarterbacked the Tigers’ first three possessions of the night. Though the Tigers scored their lone offensive touchdown in the first half with Vizzina, his two drives consisted of a three-and-out and then a one-play drive which ended with him throwing an interception.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said Vizzina did not play the rest of the half because he injured his left arm. Swinney said he could not feel anything in his left arm.

Reynolds came into the game on Clemson’s next possession and he quarterbacked Clemson’s final six possessions of the half. He led the Tigers on three scoring drives, all field goals, including a two-minute drive at the end of the half where willed the Tigers to a 38-yard Nolan Hauser field goal.

Clemson led 16-7 at the break.

“He has kind of grown up,” Swinney said about his freshman quarterback. “He made a few mistakes, but he has kind of grown up.”

On the two-minute drive to end the half, Reynolds found Tyler Brown for a 20-yard gain on third down-and-20 from the Clemson 44-yard line to keep the drive alive. He then rumbled 16 yards to the Southern 20 to set up Hauser’s field goal attempt on the last play of the half.

“That was a great drive right there (at the end). He is getting better,” Swinney said.

Reynolds completed 12 of 17 passes for 160 yards in the first half. He also ran 9 times for 32 yards.

Vizzina completed 4 of 7 passes for 19 yards, including a 10-yard TD pass to T.J. Moore that gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead at the time. However, Vizzina’s next pass was a poorly thrown deep ball that was intercepted by Southern’s Jakyri Jones.

The Tigers had 31 yards on 11 plays with Vizzina at quarterback.
