It only took two games for Tait Reynolds to overtake Christopher Vizzina in the race to be Clemson’s starting quarterback.

Head coach Dabo Swinney revealed on Tuesday during his weekly press conference that Vizzina was ahead of the freshman by a slim margin heading into the season, and after watching both play over the first two weeks of the season, Reynolds has now won the job.

While Swinney stopped short of saying Reynolds would start every game the rest of the season, the freshman seems to be firmly entrenched in the role for now.

And the decision to go with Reynolds had nothing to do with Vizzina suffering a minor injury against the Eagles.

“Again, we got to go play games. Anything can happen,” the head coach said. “Everybody has got to perform. It is no different than when CV was out there. He has got to perform. But Tait has passed him, and he has won the job. So, he is going to be the starter. We will see where it goes from there.”

Reynolds certainly showed flashes of what he can be in the 22-7 win over Georgia Southern, completing 16-of-27 for 178, while also adding 38 rushing yards. However, he also made plenty of freshman mistakes that Swinney expects to be cleaned up, now that he will be taking all the first-team reps in practice.

“I think he can take a huge step, especially getting all the reps and now, really learning from his mistakes,” Swinney added. “We all grow wiser from our own experience. We all grow wiser from our mistakes. So, I expect him to be a wiser player this week. I don’t expect him to be a fifth-year quarterback, but I expect him to be a much better quarterback than he was last week.”

As for where Swinney wants to see the most improvement? It’s Reynolds’ decisions in the run game. With an offensive line that is already struggling, any mistake from Reynolds, such as making the wrong decision on a zone read, only magnifies the situation.

Swinney just wants to see his freshman play within the system and not try to do too much.

“He’s got to make the right decisions in the run game. I mean, it is just that simple. That would be number one,” Swinney said. “And again, just be disciplined with his process and just play within the system. Just trust what you are coached to do. He doesn’t have to be Superman. Just do the little things right. Just the routine stuff.”

“There are just little things. Little details that he has to learn from and clean up. And he will.”
