Following three productive seasons and nearly 2,000 total snaps at Clemson, Khalil Barnes entered the transfer portal this past January looking for a new opportunity.

The senior safety has now come “full circle.”

Barnes transferred from Clemson to Georgia for a fresh start back home where his family is based.

“It’s been a blessing,” Barnes told the media this week. “The story is crazy how you can come back full circle, and be back living where my whole family is from.”

Barnes is an Athens native and attended North Oconee High School, making the move to Georgia a homecoming.

Growing up a Bulldogs fan, Barnes grabbed hold of the chance to return to his roots and live out the chance to play for his childhood dream school.

“I, for sure, grew up a Georgia fan. … Growing up, that’s all I knew,” he said.

After beginning his college career playing for Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Barnes is now suiting up for the only other active college football head coach who has won multiple national titles – Georgia’s Kirby Smart.

Barnes sees similarities between Swinney and Smart as coaches themselves, as well as how they manage their respective programs, which has helped make it a smooth transition for Barnes.

“There’s, for sure, some similarities. I think the biggest one is the true connection that we have with everybody on the team,” Barnes said. “It’s not just for social media videos — it’s true, we really do love each other and spend a lot of time with each other outside the field. And I think when you do run a program like that, it shows on the field.”

“Just how much they put into their teams, like, it’s no coincidence why they’re successful,” Barnes added. “They focus on a lot of the little things — stuff that probably goes over a lot of our heads, they are really zeroing in on.”

Barnes was selected to the preseason All-SEC Third Team by SEC Media before the 2026 campaign, and he has started each of his first two games with the Bulldogs, wins over Tennessee State and Western Kentucky.

Barnes burst onto the scene in his debut season at Clemson in 2023, earning freshman All-American honors while becoming the first Clemson player in the Dabo Swinney era to record multiple forced fumbles and multiple interceptions in a freshman season.

As a junior in 2025, Barnes recorded 46 tackles (one for loss) and five pass breakups in 521 defensive snaps over 10 games (nine starts). It marked the first season of his career that he did not record an interception. He picked off three passes as a freshman and four more during his sophomore campaign.

The 6-foot, 200-pounder was credited with 147 tackles (6.5 for loss), 16 pass breakups, seven interceptions, three forced fumbles, a sack and a fumble recovery (which he returned 42 yards for a touchdown) over 37 games (30 starts) during his career as a Tiger from 2023-25.

Barnes was the only player in the nation to record at least seven interceptions and at least three forced fumbles across the 2023-24 campaigns, and his seven interceptions across 2023-24 were the most by a Clemson player across his freshman and sophomore seasons since Rashard Hall’s eight interceptions in his first two seasons in 2009-10.
