Following Clemson’s 28-20 comeback victory over North Carolina on Saturday at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an injury update on senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina.

Clemson had Vizzina listed as a game-time decision Saturday morning after previously being listed as questionable Friday night.

The Clemson Insider learned Friday afternoon that Vizzina is suffering from a lower arm injury (elbow) and would not play in the game vs. UNC.

That news meant Vizzina would not be available as the Tigers’ backup quarterback against UNC. Swinney announced last Sunday that true freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds was going to start the UNC game.

Following the game, Swinney said Vizzina’s injury is a “short-term” injury.

The training staff was optimistic about Vizzina’s injury last Sunday, according to Swinney. But Swinney added that the area swelled up and had to be drained during the week.

“They told us on Sunday that they felt like he’d be fine,” Swinney said. “He just needed to get his range of motion, but it kind of swelled up on Tuesday, and so they had to drain it. And he’s better, but he still couldn’t quite get his arm to where he could secure the ball with his left arm. So, he’s going to be OK. He’ll be OK. But it was a game-time decision. And Sunday, [the training staff said], ‘He’s going to be OK.’ But the swelling, and then having to drain it, kind of gave him a setback … So, short-term. It’ll be a short-term thing.”

Vizzina started each of Clemson’s first two games this season. Before being injured in last week’s win against Georgia Southern, he played the first three series, completing 4 of 7 passes for 19 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

In his two games this season, Vizzina has completed 14-of-23 passes (60.9 percent) for 102 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Making his first career start vs. UNC, Reynolds went 20-of-29 passing for 215 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Clemson returns to the field next Friday night when the Tigers travel to the West Coast to take on the California Golden Bears in Berkeley, Calif. (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).
