CLEMSON — It looks like Clemson and Georgia will not play in football, again, anytime soon.

The Clemson Insider has confirmed the two longtime rivals have canceled their future matchups, which were scheduled for 2029, 2030, 2032 and 2033.

Clemson and Georgia, whose campuses are just 75 miles apart, have met 66 times in college football. The Bulldogs own a 44-18-4 lead in the all-time series. The two were supposed to meet at Memorial Stadium in Clemson on September 15, 2029, followed by a matchup at Sanford Stadium in Athens on August 31, 2030.

The two other games were scheduled for September 4, 2032, in Athens and September 3, 2033, in Clemson. The news was first reported by the Athens Banner-Herald on Monday night.

This news does not come as surprise. TCI learned last winter, when the ACC announced it was going to a nine-game conference season, that the non-conference matchups with the Bulldogs and other SEC teams that the Tigers played early in the season in past years were in jeopardy.

The Tigers begin a 12-year home-and-home series with Notre Dame in 2027. Five of those meetings were already scheduled through the ACC’s deal with Notre Dame. Clemson is still scheduled to play Oklahoma in a home-and-home non-conference series in 2035 and 2036.

Of course, the Tigers play rival South Carolina every year in a home-and-home series. With the SEC playing a nine-game conference schedule, as well, plus its annual battle with Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs were like Clemson in the sense it was trying to ease up its non-conference slate.

There was talk about the two teams moving at least one game to a neutral site, like they did in Charlotte in 2021 and in Atlanta in 2024, but the logistics of trying to pull that off with the conference schedules and other non-conference games made that too difficult, TCI was told.

With Georgia off the schedule, Clemson has to fill a non-conference opponent in 2030, 2032 and 2033. The Tigers already have three non-conference opponents in 2029 in Notre Dame, Furman and South Carolina.

In 2030, 2032 and 2033, Clemson is scheduled to play Notre Dame and South Carolina at the moment, but they will likely add a Group of 6 or FCS opponent in Georgia’s place.

The Tigers are expected to begin their nine-game conference slate in 2028. TCI was told last winter, Clemson will be the only team in the ACC next year to play eight conference games due to contractual issues in the non-conference.

Clemson is scheduled to play non-conference games against Georgia State, Wofford, Notre Dame and South Carolina in 2027.

Clemson and Georgia played 24 times from 1962-1987. The only two times they did not meet during that stretch was in 1966 and 1972.

The best stretch in the history of the rivalry came from 1977-1987. Known by some as the Eleven-Year War, no rivalry in the country was more intense or competitive than the Clemson-Georgia Series.

In those 11 years, the two teams battled to a 5-5-1 record, which started with a one-point Clemson victory in 1977 in Athens and ended with a one-point Clemson victory in 1987 in Clemson. The average margin of victory in the series during that 11-year stretch was 4.7 points per game. Nine of the 11 games were decided by a touchdown or less.

The annual series discontinued in 1988 due to conflict in Georgia’s SEC schedule. They played home-and-home in 1990 and 1991, 1994 and 1995, 2002 and 2003 and 2013 and 2014.

Georgia has won eight of the last 10 meetings and three straight, including a 34-3 victory over the Tigers in 2024 in Atlanta — the last time the two rivals met on the gridiron.
