During his Tuesday press conference ahead of Friday’s game at Cal, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided the latest update on an injured Tigers quarterback.
Senior backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina is dealing with a left elbow injury that he suffered in Clemson’s second game of the season vs. Georgia Southern on Sept. 12. He did not play in last Saturday’s game vs. North Carolina and was not available as the backup QB.
According to Swinney, Vizzina has “made a lot of progress” with his injury and is “getting better and better” but is still working to get a full range of motion. It remains to be seen whether he will be available as the backup QB at Cal.
“CV is better,” Swinney said Tuesday. “He’s made a lot of progress each day. Took some reps yesterday, so he’s getting better each day. And the biggest thing is just getting the full movement – his arm’s fine, his shoulder – it’s just being able to really turn and really push the ball, load the ball. He wants to have confidence to be able to move his arm without any pain there.
“But he’s gotten a lot better. It’s minute-by-minute, day-by-day – he’s getting better and better.”
Vizzina started each of Clemson’s first two games this season before Swinney named true freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds as the starter for the UNC game. Making his first career start vs. the Tar Heels, Reynolds went 20-of-29 passing for 215 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Prior to being injured in the win against Georgia Southern, Vizzina played the first three series, completing 4 of 7 passes for 19 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In his two games this season, Vizzina has completed 14-of-23 passes for 102 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Fifth-year former walk-on Trent Pearman would be Clemson’s backup QB if Vizzina is unavailable Friday night, when the Tigers take on the California Golden Bears in Berkeley, Calif. (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).
