They say defense travels, and in the first half of Friday night’s game, Clemson’s traveled to Berkeley, Calif.

Using different looks and blitzes, the Tigers held Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele to 6 of 13 passing for 47 yards in the first half with one interception. Clemson took a 10-7 lead into the locker room thanks to its defense, which limited the Golden Bears to 93 total yards in the first 30 minutes.

Clemson had just one sack in the first half, but the pressure affected Sagapolutele, as he was uncharacteristically off on a lot of his first half throws.

The Bears had just two first half drives end in Clemson territory.

The first came on the second possession of the game, when they drove 44 yards in eight plays to the Clemson 26-yard line. However, on fourth down, Darien Mayo deflected Sagapolutele pass which caused it to flutter to the ground incomplete.

Before the end of the half, Cal drove to the Clemson 33-yard line on an 11-play, 42-yard drive, but kicker Chase Myer missed on a 51-yard try.

The Bears’ only first-half-score came on a fumble return for a TD in the first quarter.

Cal’s offense was 1-for-5 on third down and averaged just 3.4 yards per play.
