Miami head coach Mario Cristobal offered lofty praise for Clemson true freshman starting quarterback Tait Reynolds, calling him “an absolute specimen of a player” and an “ultra-competitive” athlete.

Speaking to the media ahead of the fourth-ranked Hurricanes’ road game against the Tigers at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Cristobal rattled off Reynolds’ impressive physical traits and characteristics.

Cristobal stated that the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder has “already mastered” Clemson’s offense despite having only played in four games and made two starts so far.

“Great player,” Cristobal said. “Ultra-competitive. His nature, his demeanor — a guy that has already mastered the offense in a short amount of time. Great arm, extremely accurate, great feet, tough, physical, an absolute specimen of a player, of an athlete, and the guy that just finds ways to win.”

Cristobal and his staff are familiar with Reynolds, as the young signal-caller threw at a Miami Hurricanes prospect camp back in June 2024 during his high school recruitment, before he ultimately committed to the Tigers a month later on July 7. The Queen Creek, Ariz., native was the No. 3 prospect in the state of Arizona and the 11th-best dual-threat quarterback nationally in the 2026 recruiting class, according to ESPN.

On Dec. 3, 2025, Reynolds officially signed with the Tigers, before enrolling early in January. After competing with senior Christopher Vizzina for Clemson’s starting QB job throughout the spring and fall camp, head coach Dabo Swinney named Vizzina the Week 1 starter at LSU.

Vizzina started the opener, but Reynolds saw his first collegiate action off the bench. In Week 2 vs. Georgia Southern, Reynolds replaced Vizzina in the first quarter following an interception and an elbow injury to Vizzina, sparking the offense with extended playing time.

Swinney officially named Reynolds the starter for Clemson’s ACC opener vs. North Carolina in Week 3, when he led a second-half rally to earn his first win. He then helped guide the Tigers to a win over Cal last Friday in his first career road start.

Cristobal says Reynolds has “not flinched” since taking over the starting role.

“He could do it all, and he’s complimented by some great weapons and a very big, physical offensive line and a tight end crew,” Cristobal said. “So, he’s a guy that certainly has, again, went in there, has not flinched and has played great for them.”

Heading into Saturday’s matchup (7:30 p.m., ABC), Reynolds has completed 54 of his 84 passes (64.3%) for 521 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions, while rushing for 83 yards on 41 carries.
