CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke with the media following Wednesday’s practice behind the Allen Reeves Football Complex.
The Tigers prepare to host No. 4 Miami at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The game is scheduled to kick at 7:30 p.m. (ABC).
Below are some of the notes from Swinney’s post practice gathering with the media.
–Swinney says injured players, such as offensive guard Elyjah Thurmon (lower leg) and defensive tackle Devarrick Woods (lower leg) are doing well and have gotten better each and every day. “We are trending in a good direction,” Swinney said.
–A guy who is not trending in a good direction is quarterback Christopher Vizzina. He appears to be questionable for Saturday’s game due to his elbow injury. Swinney said his senior quarterback is better but there is a small fracture in his elbow and that is he is getting better. “His range of motion is getting better, but again, it is a daily thing. He is practicing and he can throw. He is still not 100-percent on his left arm. If he plays, he plays with a brace on it to protect it.”
–Swinney confirmed that if the Tigers (3-1, 2-0 ACC) had to go with another quarterback, if starter Tait Reynolds was unavailable, Trent Pearman would be the guy. Pearman is currently the Tigers No. 2 quarterback. “(Pearman) is 100 percent, but CV would play if we had to have him. Again, he is not 100 percent with his left arm, so we would go with Trent first.”
–Swinney was asked about offensive lineman Mason Wade, who has not played this season. Wade has been on the Tigers’ injury report the last two weeks and has been listed as out. The Clemson coach said they anticipate Wade will be back at some point this season. Wade’s injury has not been shared to the media.
–In his first two games back, since being suspended following a preseason arrest, defensive tackle Vic Burley has played a total of 13 snaps thus far — nine in the UNC game and four at Cal. Could fans see more of Burley this week against Miami, who is averaging 227 yards a game on the ground thus far? “We will see. He is practicing every week, but, obviously, he got way behind from a physical conditioning standpoint,” Swinney said. “While he was out, I am not sure he did a whole lot, so he has been slowly kind of working his way back in there. Nick (Eason) is going to play the guys that give us the best chance to win. They have to earn that every day in practice.”
