Saban Breaks Down Clemson-Miami Matchup

During Saturday’s broadcast of ESPN’s College GameDay, Nick Saban was part of the GameDay panel that unanimously picked No. 4 Miami to defeat Clemson on Saturday night at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.

Saban was very straightforward with his selection, saying he’s “all in on Miami.”

“I think they’re one of the most complete teams in the country so far this year, and I think they’re going to dominate Clemson,” Saban boldly stated.

Before making that prediction, Saban went more in-depth on the matchup during a different segment earlier in the College GameDay broadcast.

The legendary former Alabama coach discussed Miami’s offense — led by star quarterback Darian Mensah, who has more touchdown passes (14) than incompletions (12) through four games this season while completing an absurd 88.7% of his passes for 1,211 yards with no interceptions.

Mensah is at the helm of a Hurricanes attack that entered Week 5 ranked first in the country in yards per game (588.8) and third nationally in points per contest (51.8).

“Darian Mensah – he’s got more touchdowns than incompletions. I mean, the guy’s phenomenal,” Saban said. “Now, Miami’s O-line is probably not what it was a year ago. But I know [Miami head coach] Mario Cristobal is going to get those guys to continue to improve throughout the year. They’ve got a great runner. This team is going to be hard to beat and they’re going to score points on everybody.”

Saban says the Tigers will give themselves the best chance to win if they can shorten the game by controlling the ball and clock, and playing keep away from Mensah and Miami’s high-octane offense.

The weather could be a big factor in the game, with the possibility of inclement conditions – but Saban doesn’t believe sloppy weather will benefit Clemson against Miami’s offense, despite what some may think.

“The best chance Clemson has is can we shrink the game, keep the ball away from Miami’s offense?” Saban said. “And everybody’s saying the weather is going to help them do that – I’m an old DB coach. And I’m telling you, the weather favors the offense. You can’t guard people in the mud. You can’t guard people on a bad field. You know where you’re going, I don’t know where you’re going – I’m supposed to do better, in bad conditions? It doesn’t work that way. Miami will have a field day.”

On the flip side of the matchup, Saban says Clemson needs to get the ball in the hands of its weapons at wide receiver in order to exploit a Miami defense missing three key defensive backs in the secondary due to injury.

“Clemson’s issue is, they’ve got really good receivers – they haven’t been able to get them the ball, and they need to get them the ball to take advantage of these guys who are out in Miami’s secondary,” Saban said.

Both Miami and Clemson enter the matchup at 2-0 in ACC play, with the Hurricanes 4-0 overall and the Tigers 3-1.

Kickoff at Clemson’s Death Valley is set for 7:30 p.m. on ABC. Miami is a 15.5-point favorite.
