Shipley Primed for Leading Role in Week 5?

Former Clemson star running back Will Shipley appears primed for a prominent role Sunday for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

Starting Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is week-to-week with a hamstring injury and likely to sit out, according to reports, while backup Tank Bigsby landed on injured reserve with an abdominal injury.

Though Philadelphia signed Dameon Pierce off the practice squad to the active roster for depth, Shipley is reportedly expected to operate as the lead back and see the lion’s share of the backfield workload.

“I prepare every week like I’m a starter,” Shipley said, via Eagles reporter Andrew DiCecco. “So, just whatever my role is this week, I’m taking it one day at a time. … But Sunday rolls around, whatever my role is, I’m gonna embrace it and do what I’ve done from day one.”

Sunday’s game against the Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London is set for a 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff. It will be televised on NFL Network.

Shipley is now in his third NFL season after being selected by the Eagles in the fourth round (No. 127 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

In Philadelphia’s first four games this season, Shipley has rushed for 51 yards on 15 carries while catching four passes for 24 yards.

In 35 career NFL regular season games, the 5-foot-11, 209-pounder has recorded 59 carries for 182 yards, as well as 17 receptions for 115 yards.

Shipley experienced a special rookie campaign with the Eagles in 2024. He had an unforgettableperformance in the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders on January 26, 2025, as he tallied 165 all-purpose yards, two tackles, a forced fumble and his first career touchdown.

Then, his first professional campaign culminated with him earning a Super Bowl championship ring when the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

Shipley enjoyed a superlative three-year career both athletically and academically at Clemson from 2021-23.

In addition to exiting Clemson in the top 10 in school history in total touchdowns (33), rushing touchdowns (31), 100-yard rushing games (10), all-purpose yards (4,253) and kickoff return yards (904), he is believed to be the first FBS player on record to produce 4,000 career all-purpose yards and earn a degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA in only a three-year span.
