MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Early on in fall ball, Clemson head baseball coach Erik Bakich is leaning heavily on some of his freshmen.
Not only has he given his first-year players opportunities during the early intra-squad scrimmages over the past few weeks, but Bakich also used several freshmen during the Tigers’ 5-1 win over Coastal Carolina in exhibition action at Pelicans Park in Myrtle Beach on Friday night.
Chase Kiker got the start at first base, Jack Schuman in center field, Louis Hernandez Jr. at third base and Sterling Coaxum in right field.
Hernandez’s two-run double with the bases loaded in the top of the second provided all of the runs Clemson would need. Schuman also beat out an infield hit in the eighth, meaning freshmen had two of the Tigers’ four hits in the win.
“High ceiling guys, just high floor, high ceiling,” Bakich said. “It is tough to play in this league as a freshman, and there are some guys that are going to push some of the older guys for playing time.”
Bakich didn’t just lean on freshmen in the field and at the plate. Two of his rookie hurlers also had standout performances in the victory.
Lefty Ethan Trivison pitched the third, just after Clemson had taken a 3-0 lead. The freshman did allow a run on one hit and a walk, but he also struck out two, and has shown a lot of promise in some of the intrasquads.
Right-hander Carson Adomnik pitched the sixth, striking out all three hitters he faced. He was by far the most impressive freshman pitcher seen on Friday night.
“Some of these kids are just these tall, lean, athletic bodies,” Bakich added. “You can easily envision them getting a lot stronger, getting more physical and what they will be with some more development with a couple more trips around the sun.”
The two teams will play one more exhibition on Saturday morning at 10 a.m., or that is the hope. The game was moved up from 1 p.m. in an effort to get it in before forecasted rain moves in.
If the teams are able to actually play, expect to see another one of those high-ceiling freshmen, as Ethan Offing is scheduled to be in the lineup. Offing was selected by the Red Sox in the 18th round of the most recent MLB Draft, but chose to come to Clemson instead. First-year player Lucas Cannady is also likely to see action.
Parker Davis and Kayden McGlauflin are two of the freshman hurlers who could get some time on the mound on Saturday.
“I think these are some high-end guys,” Bakich. “You think about Clemson players, Clemson athletes in the past — when I think of some of those teams back in the 2000s, these tall, athletic guys that can run, we got quite a few of them.”
