Swinney Gives Latest Injury Update on Clemson QB

During his radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided the latest update on a veteran signal-caller continuing to recover from injury.

Swinney gave the latest on senior backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who suffered a left elbow injury back in Week 2 vs. Georgia Southern.

Swinney said that Vizzina’s bigger elbow brace is off and he’s now wearing a sleeve and smaller pad.

“He’s not 100%, but today’s the best I’ve seen him in a while,” Swinney said. “The big brace is off, so he’s got like a sleeve and kind of a pad on it. But he looked a million times better today, as far as being able to get his arm up to where he can really create the type of torque that you want to get the velocity on the ball and all that type of stuff. So, it was good to see him, because like I said, it’s the best he’s looked.”

Vizzina was available if needed for Clemson’s most recent game (vs. Miami on Oct. 3), but just as an emergency QB behind true freshman starter Tait Reynolds and fifth-year signal-caller Trent Pearman.

“[Vizzina has] been out for a couple games. He would’ve been an emergency guy in the last game only, if we would have had to have him, but he wasn’t 100%,” Swinney said.

“So, he’s getting better, and I just love his spirit and his attitude. He’s shown up every day. He’s a great teammate, and we’re gonna need him at some point. So, this has been a good bye week for him, too, to get to where he can function like we need him to.”

Reynolds took over as Clemson’s starting quarterback ahead of the Week 3 matchup vs. North Carolina after Vizzina started each of the Tigers’ first two games.

Across those two starts, Vizzina completed 14-of-23 passes (60.9%) for 102 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Coming off its open date last weekend, the Tigers return to the field Saturday when they host Charleston Southern at Memorial Stadium (12 p.m., ACC Network).
