When Tait Reynolds committed to Clemson in the summer of 2024, the plan was to play both football and baseball.
However, now that he’s won the starting quarterback job as a true freshman, his future on the baseball diamond isn’t quite as clear.
Erik Bakich’s team is already in the midst of fall ball, while Reynolds is leading the Tigers on the gridiron. With college football basically like a full-time job in this era, and the college baseball season severely overlapping with spring football practice, a quarterback playing both sports has never been more challenging.
On Tuesday, Reynolds was asked about the possibility of playing baseball in 2027 and if there was a cutoff for when a decision has to be made.
“I am not sure if I have to decide anytime soon,” Reynolds said. “I would love to. That would be awesome.”
In fact, Reynolds has been so busy with football and trying to improve as a quarterback that he didn’t even have time to make it over to Doug Kingsmore Stadium for any fall baseball practices during the bye week.
“I didn’t. I was kind of staying here, watching film,” the quarterback said.
Clemson has had a quarterback play both sports in the past. Kyle Parker excelled at both during his collegiate career, before being selected by the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft.
Most recently, Will Taylor played both sports at Clemson. He was a wide receiver on the football team. However, he ultimately decided to give up football to concentrate solely on his baseball career. Taylor was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 2024 draft.
Reynolds was a big-time baseball prospect in high school and was at one time committed to play the sport at Arizona State. The two-sport star was ranked among the Top 70 outfielder prospects in the 2026 class and as one of the Top 10 players in the state of Arizona.
The Queen Creek (AZ) native backed off of his verbal pledge to the Sun Devils after picking up his football offer from Clemson. He would ultimately have close to 30 football offers.
And right now, the football field is solely where his focus lies. If there is a decision to be made regarding playing baseball next year, it will be made once the football season concludes.
“We will talk about that after the season, for sure.”
Back in August, Bakick was asked about Reynolds potentially joining the team for next season. While he didn’t sound overly optimistic, he did not slam the door completely shut.
“Possibly, yeah,” Bakich said. “But right now the plan is let’s kick some butt as a quarterback.”
