Swinney Gives Great Update on Brown-Shuler’s Treatment

Back in May, Clemson announced that defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler had been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, which would obviously force him to miss the 2026 season amid treatment and recovery.

During an appearance on WCCP 105.5 FM The Roar on Wednesday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided a positive update on how things are progressing for Brown-Shuler.

Swinney shared that Brown-Shuler has almost completed his chemotherapy treatments and is scheduled to ring the bell next Thursday.

Of course, ringing the bell after cancer treatment is symbolic and marks the end of treatment. He aims to return for the 2027 football season.

“We have a player who hopefully is going to ring the bell next Thursday, and I’m going to be there to watch it,” Swinney said.

Brown-Shuler committed to Clemson in April 2023 as a four-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class according to multiple recruiting services. He was ranked as a top-150 national prospect and the country’s sixth-best defensive tackle by Rivals.

A four-time all-region and all-state honoree at Pace Academy in Atlanta, Brown-Shuler enrolled at Clemson in the summer of 2024. He redshirted his first season at Clemson, while recording five tackles in 49 defensive snaps over four games. In 2025, he played 57 defensive snaps and registered one tackle across three games.

Swinney also shared that ESPN’s College GameDay show is planning a feature story for the Clemson–South Carolina rivalry game highlighting the cancer journeys/battles of Brown-Shuler and former South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia.

Garcia has been battling Stage 4 colorectal cancer.

“GameDay’s going to do a feature, Clemson-South Carolina game, with those two guys,” Swinney said. “I think that’s something great, and another thing I know will impact a lot of people and create a lot of awareness.”
