Swinney Gives New Injury Update on Clemson QB

During his media availability following Clemson’s practice on Wednesday, head coach Dabo Swinney provided the latest update on a veteran signal-caller’s recover from injury.

Senior backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina suffered a left elbow injury back in Week 2 vs. Georgia Southern. While Swinney says Vizzina isn’t fully recovered, he has made a lot of progress.

“CV is still not 100%, but this has been the best week he’s had since before he got hurt,” Swinney said Wednesday evening.

Swinney was asked if he anticipated it being such a lengthy recovery process for Vizzina.

“He’s just gotten better and better. We thought it would bounce back a little bit quicker, but it’s just been hard for him,” Swinney said. “But he’s gotten better. He’s had a really good week, and it’s just one of those things that’s been day-to-day.”

As you know, true freshman Tait Reynolds took over as Clemson’s starting quarterback ahead of the Week 3 matchup vs. North Carolina after Vizzina started each of the Tigers’ first two games.

Swinney noted that Vizzina wasn’t available at all for the North Carolina game, and then has since only been available as an emergency QB option.

“He was completely out the next game [vs. North Carolina],” Swinney said. “We thought it’d be close, and he was completely out. So he was out [for the] North Carolina [game], and then [the game at] Cal, he was available, but really only if we had to have him,” Swinney said.

“It would have been like we would have had to get through Trent [Pearman] and probably even through Brock [Bradley] before we got to [Vizzina.] He was just still really, really sore. But obviously on gameday, he’s got a little medicine to help with the pain, but we would have only played him if we had to. But he was available if needed.”

Vizzina’s bigger elbow brace is off and he’s now wearing a sleeve and smaller pad.

“This is the first week he’s been out of the brace,” Swinney said. “He’s just got a sleeve and a pad now as opposed to that big brace. But he’s still getting his full range of motion back.”

Across the two games he’s played in this season, both starts, Vizzina completed 14-of-23 passes (60.9%) for 102 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Coming off its open date last weekend, the Tigers return to the field Saturday when they host Charleston Southern at Memorial Stadium (12 p.m., ACC Network).
