Swinney Gives Update on Injured WR

Following Saturday’s 37-0 win over Charleston Southern at Memorial Stadium, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided an update on an injured wide receiver.

Fifth-year senior Tristan Smith was injured and went down early in the fourth quarter when he collided with sophomore wide receiver Juju Preston on an incomplete pass to Preston.

Smith left the field after the play, assisted by trainers.

During his postgame press conference, TCI asked Swinney for an update on Smith’s status.

“He’s fine,” Swinney said. “He’s going to be all right.”

Smith, who caught a 3-yard pass against Charleston Southern, has recorded two receptions for 9 yards so far this season. On a Charleston Southern kickoff return in the second quarter, Smith forced a fumble that safety Kylon Griffin returned 17 yards for a touchdown.

Back in June, Smith won a court battle for an extra year of eligibility when he was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA from the 13th Judicial Circuit in Pickens County, giving him a fifth year of eligibility and clearing him to play in the 2026 football season.

After transferring to Clemson, following an outstanding 2024 campaign at Southeast Missouri State, Smith tallied 24 receptions for 239 yards and a touchdown in 317 offensive snaps over 13 games (four starts) for the Tigers in 2025.

Smith spent the first two years of his college career playing at the JUCO level, at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, from 2022-23.

Clemson (4-2, 2-1 ACC) returns to action next Saturday night vs. Virginia Tech at Memorial Stadium.
