Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney had high praise for starting quarterback Tait Reynolds following the Tigers’ 37-0 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
During his postgame press conference, Swinney stated that he thought it was “Tait’s best game, by far.”
Reynolds completed 17 of 26 passes for 127 yards while adding 40 rushing yards on seven carries. He fumbled once but recovered his own fumble, and he didn’t commit any turnovers in the contest.
Swinney highlighted the true freshman’s poise and control of the offense.
“I thought it was Tait’s best game, by far,” Swinney said. “Just very poised. Really good control of what he was doing. Made some great throws that we didn’t finish on. That was probably the biggest disappointment. … So, I was disappointed with some of the drops we had. But Tait – 5.7 yards per carry. He’s getting more confident there.”
Saturday marked Reynolds’ fourth career start after taking over Clemson’s starting QB job ahead of the Week 3 matchup vs. North Carolina on Sept. 19.
Swinney elaborated on Reynolds’ performance when asked what he felt made the Charleston Southern game his best one of the season.
“Decision-making. Just playing with rhythm. Poise, and just really confident in everything he was doing,” Swinney said. “I thought he ran the ball with authority and ran the ball with confidence. So, he just really did a great job. I was really proud of him.”
Swinney pointed out that Reynolds’ stat line could have been much better if not for the team’s receiver drops.
Swinney noted that Reynolds put multiple balls “on the money” to top targets like T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco that simply were not hauled in.
“He should’ve had a couple touchdown passes. I hate that didn’t work out for him,” Swinney said.
“I thought he did a nice job getting out of the pocket a few times,” Swinney added. “Made some good throws, some good reads. And he threw three to T.J. that were on the money. He threw one to Wesco on the money. Those guys are great players, and it wasn’t a great day for T.J. today, but he’ll bounce back.”
In six game appearances this season, including his four starts, Reynolds has completed 100 of 154 passes (64.9%) for 943 yards with one touchdown pass and three interceptions.
After the win over Charleston Southern, Reynolds and the Tigers (4-2, 2-1 ACC) will now turn their focus to a five-game stretch of ACC play, beginning next Saturday night against Virginia Tech at Memorial Stadium.
