Certa Details Decision to Transfer to Clemson

CLEMSON — It hasn’t taken long for transfer Cole Certa to settle in at Clemson.

After spending his first two seasons at fellow ACC school Notre Dame, Certa entered the portal following last season. He arrived in Clemson ahead of the summer, and the transition has been seamless.

“It has been awesome,” Certa said. “When I got here in May, the coaches and returners, they brought me in with open arms. It has just been an easy transition, and it has been a lot of fun.”

When Certa entered the portal, he did so knowing he’d have plenty of options when it came to joining a new program. However, he quickly realized Brad Brownell’s program at Clemson was exactly the fit he was looking for. And having played against the Tigers while at Notre Dame, the 6-foot-5 guard was already a little familiar with Brownell’s Tigers.

“I think coach Brownell and just the whole staff, and just what they pitched to me — how they were going to play this year. It sounded like a lot of fun,” Certa added. “The culture. I mean, I scouted and played against them the past few years, so I know what they are like. It was just something I wanted to be a part of.”

Certa was certainly one of the league’s best shooters a season ago, particularly down the stretch. Over his final nine games, he averaged 19.3 points and shot over 37% from three-point land.

Originally, Certa says he was likely going to play the three, but once Zac Foster went down with a season-ending injury, he expects he will see a lot of time at the two. Either way, his skills on the perimeter should prove to be beneficial for Clemson during the coming season. At the same time, he wants it known that he is more than just a shooter.

“Just a competitor, ” Certa said of his play style. “I take pride in my shooting, obviously. But I think I can bring a lot more. Whatever the team needs to win.”

And he has joined a team that he believes is primed to have some success this season.

“We have a lot of pieces,” Certa said. “We have a little bit of everything. We’ve got some really fast guards who can make a lot of plays. We’ve got a lot of shooting. We’ve got some really good pieces inside. So, I think we’ve got a little bit of everything and I am really excited for this season.”
