During his press conference Wednesday, Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris shared an update on senior backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina.
Morris said Vizzina is practicing at full speed this week, with Morris stating that the veteran signal-caller looks “full speed and ready to go.”
Morris noted that Vizzina’s return to practice provides important depth and competition for the Tigers’ quarterback room as they prepare for Saturday’s home matchup against Virginia Tech (7 p.m., ESPN).
“I think with CV being back, obviously it gives us more depth. It gives us a guy that’s been there,” Morris said. “But yeah, him being back, being at practice this week, full speed and ready to go – so yeah, that definitely helps us. Again, it creates what we’re asking – a little more competition, and just the depth that we need.”
Vizzina has had a lengthy recovery process since suffering a left elbow injury in Clemson’s Week 2 game against Georgia Southern.
On Monday night, Vizzina had his best practice since the injury, according to head coach Dabo Swinney.
“(Vizzina’s) been awesome, and actually, last night was his best practice since Georgia Southern,” Swinney said at his weekly press conference Tuesday. “He started looking like CV, which was really good. So it’s the best I’ve seen him look. So it’s really encouraging.”
Vizzina has not seen any game action since suffering the injury. However, Swinney confirmed after last Saturday’s game vs. Charleston Southern that Vizzina was “available” and “ready to go” for the contest, though he did not end up playing. Swinney mentioned that he asked Vizzina if he wanted to go in on the final drive of the game, and Vizzina told Swinney to put in true freshman Brock Bradley instead.
Swinney also noted that Vizzina wasn’t available at all for the North Carolina game in Week 3 due to his injury, and then was only available as an emergency QB option for the Week 4 game at Cal.
While Vizzina has been recovering from his injury, fifth-year senior Trent Pearman has worked as the No. 2 quarterback behind true freshman starter Tait Reynolds.
“I think Trent did a great job for us, and preparing and being in that role, for the opportunity if it did arise,” Morris said Wednesday.
Across the two games he’s played in this season, both starts, Vizzina has completed 14-of-23 passes (60.9%) for 102 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.
