CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media Wednesday following practice at the Allen Reeves Football Complex. This is Swinney’s last media availability ahead of Saturday’s ACC Showdown with Virginia Tech at Memorial Stadium.
Below is what Swinney talked about as the Tigers get set for the 7 p.m., clash (ESPN) on Saturday night.
–Swinney was asked if backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina is still trending towards being available for Saturday night’s game. Vizzina, of course, is coming off a fractured elbow he suffered in Week 2 against Georgia Southern.
“He has had his best week by far,” Swinney said. “I do not know if he is 100 percent, but he is probably 90 percent or better. He is closer than he has been. He has had a really good week of practice. It has been good to really see him have his confidence to be able to practice with the type of intensity and tempo that he needs. He is really doing everything within the offense, whether it is ball handling, running and making all the throws. He has had a good week.”
–The Clemson coach was also asked about his defensive tackles and how he feels about that group and if anyone has emerged as starters.
“I think it is still by committee,” Swinney said. “We run two guys out there that we feel had the best week. We got a group of guys that are going to play there. We are still kind of more by committee than just say two guys.”
–Swinney was later asked about his freshmen wide receivers and how they have progressed through the season. He reported Gordon Sellars, who was having a good week of practice, was injured in practice on Tuesday and will miss Saturday’s game due to a concussion. As for guys like Cam Blivens, Keil McGriff, Connor Salmin and Naeem Burroughs, Swinney is pleased with how they have progressed to this point.
“They are getting better,” he said. “If redshirting was still a thing, Connor would be a guy we would be redshirting. He is on the scout team, he is working and he is getting better. He just needs time to develop. Cam Blivens has been outstanding. He is a kid that had a great camp. Y’all probably do not know who he is, but he is a kid that is going to help us at some point and has been ready to play and has progressed.
“The guy that we are the most excited about, just based off the last two weeks, is Naeem. He is just a guy that honestly did not practice hard and did not play fast, made a lot of mistakes and had a lot of mental errors. He did not have a great spring or fall camp. He is super talented, but he had to learn how to practice with the type of intensity and the speed, because he is a fast guy, it just took him a while to get it going. But I will say, the last couple of weeks, he has been a guy that you have seen us try to get in there and evolve. He is figuring it out from how you have to practice and the speed you have to play at to get better with the fundamentals and techniques you got to have on game days.”
