Miami entered Week 8 of the college football season as the No. 1-ranked team in the country and the clear-cut frontrunner in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Hurricanes (6-0, 4-0 ACC) sit atop the conference standings as the lone team with an unblemished record in ACC play and are the only undefeated team in the league overall.
There’s no question whatsoever that Miami is the team to beat in the ACC. But rather, the bigger question is, who is Miami’s top challenger in the ACC?
On ESPN’s College GameDay, during a “Grab Bag” segment, analysts Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit both singled out who they see as the top ACC challenger to the Hurricanes.
Saban pegged No. 17-ranked Wake Forest (6-1, 4-1 ACC), which entered Week 8 as the second-place team in the conference standings, while Herbstreit pointed to 23rd-ranked and third-place SMU (5-1, 3-1).
“Who is Miami’s top challenger in the ACC? I think it’s Wake Forest,” Saban said. “Wake Forest is 6-1. Gio Lopez is scoring over 37 points a game. They’re only giving up 19. Their only loss is to Miami. The only ranked team that they play down the stretch is SMU. So, they have a pretty easy path to get to the ACC Championship Game.”
“I like SMU and Kevin Jennings,” Herbstreit chimed in.
Though neither Saban nor Herbstreit mentioned Clemson, the Tigers are still alive in the ACC Championship Game race, sitting at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play heading into tonight’s home matchup against Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-2).
Kickoff from Clemson’s Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN, with the Tigers entering the matchup as a 2.5-point favorite.
