Swinney Asked about Having NFL Type GM

During his radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed the idea of having an NFL-style model where a general manager makes the roster decisions.

Swinney defended his program’s current structure and approach to roster evaluation and construction.

“We believe in what we do here,” Swinney said. “We’ve made a lot of changes over the last several years. Obviously bringing in [Senior Director of Player Personnel, Evaluation & Scouting] Kevin Kelly was a big deal for us. He’s 25 years in the NFL, so all of our player evaluation stuff. And then Jordan [Sorrells] has done a good job as our GM. Because there’s contracts and negotiations and all that type of stuff, and I think he does an awesome job of handling all that stuff. So, it’s very thorough.”

Swinney’s comments follow public criticism regarding Clemson’s roster management, Swinney’s approach to roster construction and his developmental philosophy.

Despite the increasing outside pressure after last Saturday’s home loss to Virginia Tech that dropped the Tigers to 4-3 on the season (2-2 ACC), Swinney doubled down on the roster building and player evaluation process that his program currently deploys.

“We’ve got a young team that we think we’ve evaluated well,” Swinney said, “and I know our record isn’t what we want it to be right now, but we’re coming. We’re building this thing back the way we need to do it here at Clemson, and we’re going to build it back to the top.”

Swinney’s team returns to the field Saturday (7 p.m., ACC Network) when it faces Florida State (3-4, 1-3 ACC) at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.
