During his radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney discussed senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina’s health and the Tigers’ quarterback situation following last Saturday’s 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech.
Freshman Tait Reynolds is still locked in as the starting quarterback right now, but with Vizzina getting close to full health, Swinney noted that the benchmark for QB competition simply remains “performance.”
“Just performance,” Swinney said. “Last week was the first week that [Vizzina] was able to really rep, and still not 100%, but was closer. I’d say he was 90% or so, and so another big week.”
While Vizzina has made a lot of progress in his recovery from a left elbow injury sustained in Clemson’s Week 2 game against Georgia Southern, he has yet to see any game action since suffering the injury.
Vizzina started each of Clemson’s first two games this season, completing 14-of-23 passes (60.9%) for 102 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions across those two contests.
As for Reynolds, he took over as Clemson’s starting quarterback ahead of the Week 3 matchup vs. North Carolina. He has appeared in all seven games this season, starting the last five, and has completed 120-of-180 passes (66.7%) for 1,096 yards with one touchdown pass and three interceptions, while also rushing for 164 yards and a touchdown.
In last Saturday’s loss to Virginia Tech, Reynolds completed 20-of-26 passes (76.9%) for 153 yards and added 18 carries for a team-high 63 rushing yards and his first career rushing touchdown.
“Tait, I think, did some good things, but certainly made some mistakes, and we just gotta be better around him,” Swinney said. “We compound his mistakes with some musical chairs of taking turns on whose time it is to make mistakes, and now you don’t have precision. But yeah, he knows he’s got to play well.
“But glad to get [Vizzina] back ready. Because again, he’s been out for a while. He really wasn’t able to play at all in the North Carolina game, and then he was emergency only really for the next two games. Last week was really the first time he was able to practice like he needs to practice. So, he’s in a good spot and trending in a good way, and he’s going to be ready if we need him.”
Clemson (4-3, 2-2 ACC) travels to face Florida State (3-4, 1-3) on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
