During his Tuesday press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney dismissed the idea of taking on a different or more involved role with the offense.
Swinney was asked if he anticipates a more hands-on role for himself offensively moving forward, specifically when it comes to game planning or playcalling.
Swinney shut that down, making it clear that he still sees the playcalling duties as the role of offensive coordinator Chad Morris.
“Yeah, that’s what we hired him to do,” Swinney said. “My role’s the same as it’s been for 18 years. Well, maybe not 18 years, but probably 16 years. My role’s the same, and that’s to support these guys the best I can and help them as much as I can, and that’s not any different.”
Swinney has been very forthright about the issues Clemson has had in terms of offensive execution, and after last Saturday’s 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech, Swinney put all the blame on himself and his coaching staff, saying, “I just don’t think we helped them enough to win the game with some decisions and play calls.”
However, on Tuesday, Swinney reiterated that he has full confidence in Morris to guide the offense moving forward.
“Chad Morris, I know his name is mud right now. That is a really good football coach,” Swinney said. “He is a really smart football coach – he’s detailed, he’s a great collaborator, he’s a great leader. Like, this guy knows ball. And there ain’t nobody more frustrated. But I promise you, nobody will work harder.”
Morris and Clemson’s offense have faced intense public criticism and scrutiny during the 2026 season as the unit has severely lacked production and struggled mightily to gain traction.
Heading into Week 9 of the college football season, Clemson ranks 111th out of 138 FBS teams in scoring offense (21.4 points per game), 115th in total offense (333.1 total yards per game), 115th in passing offense (182.6 passing yards per game) and 78th in rushing offense (150.6 rushing yards per game).
The Tigers have still only thrown two touchdown passes all season, ranking dead last nationally in that category.
Clemson (4-3, 2-2 ACC) will try to pick things up offensively on Saturday when it faces Florida State (3-4, 1-3) at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
