Christian “PJ” Chancellor is one of Clemson’s current commits who flies a little under the radar.
The three-star in-state cornerback and legacy recruit out of nearby Daniel committed to the Tigers very early on, announcing a verbal pledge last summer, about a month after securing his offer.
“It is a great program,” Chancellor said in a previous interview. “They have built something special there. I love the coaching staff. The culture is great there. I have everything I need there.”
Chancellor is in the midst of a strong senior campaign, which has earned him a spot in the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. Teams tend to not throw his way all that often, and after eight games, the senior defensive back has been credited with 26 tackles, one tackle for loss, three passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Chancellor is the son of former Tigers’ standout Chris Chancellor, who was a multi-year starter in the Clemson secondary back during the early years of Dabo Swinney’s tenure. The elder Chancellor started 44 games throughout his career, recording nine interceptions.
Being a legacy recruit, Chancellor knew where his heart was, and chose to shut things down pretty quickly. However, had he chosen a different route, Daniel head coach, Chris Stone, believes Chancellor would have had no shortage of opportunities.
“He could play at a lot of different places,” Stone told The Clemson Insider. “He probably left some offers on the table that were out there and were going to come, but once he shut his recruitment down, schools kind of moved on.”
Chancellor has been a key piece on the back end of the Lions defense. With Daniel currently sitting at 9-0 and primed for another deep playoff run, the hope is Chancellor can cap off his high school career by helping the Lions to another state title.
“He is a really special athlete, but he is even a better leader on our team,” Stone added. “One of the best I have ever had.”
