CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke to the media following Wednesday’s practice, as the Tigers get set to visit Florida State on Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.
Below are some of the news and notes to come out of Wednesday’s conference call.
–Swinney was asked about the continuity on the offensive line getting better with the Tigers expected to start the same five players at FSU this week, making it the third straight game they have had the same five players up front. “I think they have played two good games in a row. Honestly, it might have been our best game, offensive line wise, this past week. Just having everyone available to where we can move Easton (Ware) because we needed him at tackle, so it has been good.”
–Last week, defensive lineman Caden Story and linebacker Fletcher Cothran played a lot, as Story recorded 24 snaps–one short of his season high–and Cothran had a season-best 21 snaps. “Caden, moving Mayo inside, has created more reps for Caden and really the last two games he has done a good job.” As for Cothran, Swinney says he has been a positive as he and Kobe McCloud and C.J. Kubah-Taylor have helped build depth at linebacker, along with starters Sammy Brown and Jeremiah Alexander.
–Swinney was also asked about the performance of defensive tackle Amare Adams, who had his best game of the season last week. He record 29 snaps in the VT game. Adams had three tackles, including 2 tackles for loss. Adams, if you recall, missed most of last season with an injury, as well as all of the spring. “He just needs to play and be coached,” Swinney said. “He just needs to do the work. Nick (Eason) is tough on those guys and he has certainly gotten better. The whole group, across the front has gotten better. He is gaining confidence every day. He has all the tools.”
–Three of the last four opponents Clemson has faced, has failed to run for 100 yards. The Tigers held Cal to 86 rushing yards, Charleston Southern to 26 and Virginia Tech to 70. Miami had just 122 yards on the ground going into the fourth quarter. “Some of it was figuring our personnel out. A guy like London Merritt coming in here and is developing. Jeremiah has been a part of that because he is a big, physical dude that knows what he is doing. We just have good players over there. Those guys know what they are doing.”
