Former Clemson Coach Takes over at Florida State

Florida State has fired head coach Mike Norvell following Saturday’s 36-24 home loss to Clemson that dropped the team to 3–5 on the season.

Rick Stockstill will take over the program on an interim basis. He was named as Florida State’s director of scouting for offense on January 29, 2024, and is in his third season back in Tallahassee this year.

Stockstill was the longtime head coach at Middle Tennessee from 2006–23.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Stockstill was an assistant coach for 23 seasons, including at Clemson from 1989-2002. During his tenure with the Tigers, he coached quarterbacks and wide receivers while also spending time as passing game coordinator, co-offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

Stockstill played quarterback at Florida State from 1977-81. He was inducted into the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

Norvell finishes his seven-season tenure with an overall record of 41–39, including a 10–22 mark over his final three seasons.

FSU was just 1-4 in ACC play this season and 1-5 against Power 4 opponents. The loss to Clemson marked the Seminoles’ third straight defeat.
