Bad News on Starting Running Back

During his radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave an unfortunate injury update on the Tigers’ starting running back.

Gideon Davidson was hobbled midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 36-24 win at Florida State, as he limped off the field after a third-and-1 rush.

Swinney said on his radio show that Davidson will be out “probably a week for sure, maybe two” due to a low-grade sprained ankle.

“He sprained his ankle,” Swinney said of Davidson. “Fortunately, it’s a low-grade, but he’s going to be kind of day-to-day.

“But probably out, probably a week for sure, maybe two. But the good news on him is it wasn’t something that it’s surgical or anything like that. Gid’s kind of like Superman to me, so I’m hoping he’s a quick healer.”

Davidson finished Saturday’s game with 12 carries for 36 yards.

Davidson, a sophomore, has rushed 105 times for a team-high 528 yards and five rushing touchdowns this season.

A former consensus four-star prospect and explosive national award-winner in high school at Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, Va.), Davidson rushed 60 times for 260 yards and caught 11 passes for 93 yards over 13 games as a true freshman in 2025.

Saturday’s road game at Syracuse is set to kick off at 12 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.
