It hasn’t taken long for Clemson’s offensive line to go from pretty healthy to the walking wounded.
While the Tigers went into Tallahassee and came away with a 36-24 win over Florida State, that victory came at a cost, as two starting offensive linemen went down with significant injuries.
Starting left guard Elyjah Thurmon suffered a scary-looking concussion in the second quarter that left him laying motionless for several moments. While all of the updates have been positive, Thurmon is going to miss this week’s game at Syracuse.
Thurmon has started seven of the first eight games, with all of those coming at left guard.
The Tigers also lost starting center Harris Sewell, who was seen in a walking boot following the win. Sewell will undergo a tightrope procedure on his ankle that will keep him out a minimum of the next two games.
Sewell, a senior, has started every game at center this season for Clemson. The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder came into the season having appeared in 35 games, with 17 of those being starts. The former four-star talent has been one of the most consistent players up front this season for the Tigers.
Having lost two key pieces up front, the next man up mentality inside the program is about to be tested.
“We do a lot of good on good in practice, and as we get into the latter part of the season, we taper the reps from some of the guys who have played a lot,” head coach Dabo Swinney said on Tuesday. “Brayden Jacobs, for example, he gets what he needs fastball-wise, but you really need to get Ian Reed some reps, because he didn’t get as many. You kind of balance that as you get into the latter part of the season, so these guys have all been getting competitive reps in practice.”
Grant Wise is expected to start at center in Sewell’s absence. The true freshman took over in Sewell’s absence against FSU. Wise has appeared in six games, logging 119 snaps, with most of those coming at right guard.
Gavin Blanchard is expected to replace Thurmon at left guard. The redshirt freshman started there against Miami in place of Thurmon, and has appeared in all but three games this season, logging 225 snaps.
Some of the other younger linemen who could be called on include Tucker Kattus and Chance Barclay. Kattus is a redshirt freshman, while Barclay is in his debut season. Redshirt freshman Easton Ware is already starting at right guard. Former walk-on and fifth-year senior Chapman Pendergrass is also an option at center should the need arise.
“Blanchard and Grant, they have played, but Barclay, Kattus, Easton, Grant and Blanchard —those five, young guys. I think that is three redshirt freshmen and two true freshmen, but those guys got to collectively as a group, step up and help us. Chap Pendergrass is another guy who is dependable at center that we trust.”
Clemson already had some younger, inexperienced guys along the offensive line coming into the season, and with these latest injuries, the team will now have to rely on more underclassmen up front down the stretch of the regular season.
“Those guys have to get it done,” Swinney said.
