Swinney Gives Latest Injury Update on Starting O-Lineman

During his postgame press conference following Saturday’s 18-13 win at Syracuse, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave the latest injury update on starting center Harris Sewell’s injury that is keeping him sidelined for at least a couple of games.

This past Monday, Swinney said on his radio show that Sewell would have to have a minor surgery. On Tuesday, Swinney revealed what the surgery is, saying that it’s tightrope surgery for an ankle injury.

After Saturday’s game, Swinney provided the latest on what Sewell’s return timeline is currently looking like. Sewell missed the Syracuse game and will be out again next week for the Georgia Tech game.

“Harris, we went ahead and did a tightrope on him. … So, we hope to get him back, certainly by the South Carolina game [on Nov. 28], they think,” Swinney said. “But who knows. We’ll see. Maybe he’s ready for Duke [on Nov. 20]. He’ll be out again this week [vs. Georgia Tech].”

Sewell suffered his injury in the 36-24 win at Florida State on Oct. 31, with freshman Grant Wise taking over once Sewell exited the game in the second half. With Sewell out, Wise was the starting center for the Syracuse game.

Prior to missing the Syracuse game, Sewell had started every game at center this season for Clemson. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound senior came into the season having appeared in 35 games, with 17 of those being starts. Before his injury, the former four-star talent had been one of the most consistent players up front this season for the Tigers.
